Doda, July 15: At least four people lost their lives and 17 others sustained injuries after a tempo traveller skidded off the road and fell into a deep gorge in the Ponda area along the Doda–Barath road on Tuesday morning.

An official told news agency JKNS that the vehicle, bearing registration number JK06-4847, was on its way when it veered off the mountainous road and plunged into the gorge, triggering a massive rescue operation.

A senior police officer, while confirming the details to news agency JKNS, said, “We have recovered four bodies from the spot and 17 injured persons have been shifted to hospital for treatment.

The rescue operation has been going on, and further investigations are underway to ascertain the cause of the accident, he said.

Authorities, including local police, SDRF teams, and volunteers, were immediately pressed into action to carry out rescue and evacuation efforts.

The condition of some of the injured is stated to be critical, while cognizance of the incident has been taken and further investigation started, officer said. (JKNS)
