Kupwara, July 20 – In the serene valley of Lolab nestled in North Kashmir’s Kupwara district, the story of a young man’s relentless passion for art is inspiring an entire generation. Abass Ashraf Dar, 24, a self-taught artist from the village of Cheerkot, has carved a niche for himself in the world of fine arts without ever stepping into a formal art institution.
Coming from a humble background, Dar faced significant financial challenges which prevented him from pursuing professional art training. Undeterred, he turned his home into his studio, he converted his struggles into strength. With patience, sleepless nights, and unwavering determination, he mastered the craft and began his journey as a self-taught artist.
Speaking about his journey, Dar shared, “I struggled a lot. Many nights I didn’t sleep, but I was sure that one day I would make myself and my parents proud. Alhamdulillah , for the past six years, I have felt stable and confident in my work as a self-taught artist,”.
Abass has successfully created striking portraits of several dignitaries, showcasing not only his technical skill but also his ability to capture emotion and personality through the canvas. His love for nature is also vividly expressed in his artwork, as he brings birds, animals, plants, and mountains to life with his brushstrokes. Each creation reflects his deep connection to the natural beauty that surrounds his homeland.
Art as bread
Now earning his livelihood through his art, Dar is more than just an artist he is a symbol of inspiration for countless young people across Kashmir who dream of achieving something on their own terms. He believes his journey doesn’t end with personal success. “My goal is not only to be an artist, I want to represent my country at international levels through my art,” he added.
As his work gains more recognition, Abass Ashraf Dar stands as a testament to what self-belief, dedication, and perseverance can achieve, even in the face of adversity.
