Srinagar, Dec 16: Two militants killed in a gunfight with the counter-insurgent forces in Redwani area of Kulgam were affiliated with the Lashkar-e-Taiba outfit, an official said.

A police spokesman in a statement said that acting on a specific input regarding the presence of militants in village Redwani area of Kulgam, a joint cordon and search operation was launched by Police, 1st RR and 18Bn CRPF in the said area.

“During the search operation, as the presence of militants got ascertained, they were given repeated opportunities to surrender; however they fired indiscriminately upon the joint search party which was retaliated leading to an encounter,” said the spokesman.

“In the ensuing encounter, 02 militants of proscribed outfit LeT (TRF) were killed and their bodies were retrieved from the site of encounter. They have been identified as Amir Bashir Dar resident of Kujjar Frisal and Adil Yousuf Shan resident of Sursano Hatipora, Kulgam,” he said.

“As per police records, both the militants were categorized militants and linked with proscribed outfit LeT (TRF). They were also part of groups involved in several crime cases including attacks on security forces and civilian atrocities,” he added.

“Incriminating materials, arms & ammunition including 02 Pistols, 02 magazines, 07 pistol rounds & 01 grenade were recovered from their possession. All the recovered materials have been taken into case records for further investigation,” said the spokesman.

“Police have registered case under relevant sections of law and investigation has been initiated. People are requested to cooperate with Police till the area at encounter site is completely sanitized and cleared of all the explosive materials, if any,” he said.

“IGP Kashmir appreciated role of police and security forces for evacuation of civilians especially during night hours who were trapped inside cordon and for conducting successful operation without any collateral damage,” said the spokesman.
