Kulgam, March 30: The District Kulgam is producing 4.50 lakh liters of milk per day and the department of Animal husbandry is continuously guiding and supporting the farmers by extending technical, medical and financial assistance through various schemes of the government to boost the sector.
This was revealed by the Chief Animal Husbandry Officer Kulgam, Dr.Nisar Ahmad while highlighting the progress and achievements of the department recorded during the current fiscal.
He added that during the current financial year Health cover was provided to 1, 30,000 cattle besides 3, 18, 000 deworming doses for Liver fluke and intestinal worms were administered to cattle in the district.
With regard to the distribution of medicines, CAHO added that medicines worth Rs. 61 lac were made available to farmers out of Govt supplies Besides HS and BQ vaccination of cattle.
He added that the department carried out an intensive FMD vaccination drive under National Animal Disease Control Programme (NADCP) and 92886 animals (100%) received FMD vaccination during the drive.
Under Centrally Sponsored scheme-Nationwide Artificial insemination Programme (NAIP), 1, 26, 370 free of cost AI’s were conducted resulting in the birth of 38614 number of elite crossbred calves during 2021-2022.
Under NLM, 16000 chicks were distributed for establishment of 40 Low Input Technology (LIT) Units in the district.
Further, under the Poultry Development Programme 2042 day old and 6102 one month old chicks were distributed among the beneficiaries.
Moreover, the department successfully established 714 backyard poultry units in the district as a supplementary source of income.
To prevent economic loss to dairy farmers, the department covered 1787 dairy cows under subsidized livestock insurance schemes this year.
To further boost the sector and to make the district self-sufficient in milk production, the department established 57  Cow dairy  units under IDDS 2021-22 which enhanced  4275 liters of daily additional milk production to the district and district is now producing more than 4.50 lac liters of milk daily.
The district is now producing surplus milk which is lifted by various collection centers and is exported to other districts thus improving and increasing the economy of the district directly.
Under different Capex schemes viz IDDS/IPDP/FDS, Rs 1.16 crores were released to 55 beneficiaries as subsidy component during 2021-22 which provided employment to 132 Unemployed Educated youth including 11 women who have become successful entrepreneurs in Dairy and Poultry sector in the district.
