Srinagar, June, 29: A youth from Soura area of Srinagar has so far borne the expenses of marriages of over 400 orphan and poor girls even as he is planning for more in the near future.

Umar Wani, a resident of Soura while talking to KNO said that since 2013, he along with the members of “We the helping hand foundation” have arranged money from their own pockets besides donations and have borne marriage expenses of over 400 orphan and poor girls.

“I was working in Europe in a company where I got inspired by some of my friends who were working for the welfare of society and I quit there and found an organization ‘We the helping hand foundation’ in the year 2013,” he said.

He said that in the year 2014 during floods he with the help of his friends here and abroad distributed around 1 crore rupees among the deserving families. “Later we started distributing grocery packets and other items among the deserving families.”

“For the last 8 years we are distributing 50 grocery packets every month among deserving families. Now we are bearing expenses of over 50 poor and orphan students enrolled in private schools.

He said that they have been organising programmes at different stages to aware people especially youth about the ill effects of using drugs and its consequences on the society under the banner of “The power of J&K Youth Association”. “We have been taking up the issues of public importance to higher ups besides make people aware,” he said.

This year we have already beared marriage expenses of over 60 poor and orphan girls during two grand mass marriage functions and another mass marriage function is scheduled to be held on 22 July this year.

He further added that main aim behind organizing mass marriage to promote simple nikkah and to help poor, orphan girls to get married who are overage now but unmarried due to social customs like dowry and gold customs.

He said that our youth are falling prey to drugs and it is duty of everyone to help society to get rid of it besides that youth must contribute in every possible for betterment of the society.
