Official sources told news agency—Kashmir News Observer (KNO), the Power Distribution Department held deliberations on June 12, where the principal secretary to the government discussed measures to streamline the power scenario in summer months. Deliberations were held to curb the menace of accumulation of outstanding electricity dues and recover the pending arrears.

Following the meetings, JPDCL issued two separate orders and directed the field functionaries to remotely disconnect the power connection of commercial establishments whose outstanding electricity dues as on 31-05-2023, are more than Rs. 1.0 Lacs and domestic connections with non-payment history of two successive months.

“The smart metered consumer’s physical disconnections may be accomplished remotely through backend commands from IT&C Division, JPDCL, Jammu’s Control Centre,” the instructions reads.

The connection without smart meters will be disconnected by physical visit of field staff.

The official further directed to educate and persuade them to pay for the electricity used by them in time, before taking corrective action.

The meeting also made it clear that reconnections should be done only after liquidation of pending arrears by the consumer, in full. No partial payments shall be allowed for any reason, whatsoever—(KNO)
