Srinagar, Jan 1: Jammu Kashmir Transporters Welfare Association Monday opposed the new penal law with the provision of up to 10 years of imprisonment and fine against accused drivers of hit-and-run cases.
Pertinently, under the new penal law, accused drivers who flee the scene of a fatal crash without reporting to authorities may face up to 10 years in jail and a fine to the tune of Rs 7 lakhs.
Transporters from Kashmir held a meeting and requested the Government of India to reconsider the implementation of the new law.
General Secretary, Jammu Kashmir Transporters Welfare Association, Sheikh Muhammad Yousuf told the news agency Kashmir News Trust that they are against the new provision and demand its withdrawal as soon as possible.
“The law is being enforced without taking representatives of the transport department into confidence,” he said adding that they will support any strike call given by the transporters from different states of India. [KNT]
