Kulgam, Nov, 06: In a significant move to strengthen the media voice in South Kashmir, the Journalists Union of Kulgam (JUoK) and the Kulgam Working Journalists Association (KWJA) have come together to push for the establishment of a Press Club in Kulgam. During a joint core group meeting held today, the two associations formed a 10-member committee tasked with advocating for the cause.
The demand for a dedicated space for journalists in Kulgam has been a longstanding issue, with local media professionals highlighting the need for a unified platform where they can collaborate, discuss stories, and address issues concerning the district.
A member of the JUoK added, “A Press Club is not just about a physical building; it’s about creating a secure, collaborative environment where journalists can share resources, discuss challenges, and collectively overcome them. This is especially important given the complexities journalists face in covering critical stories in the region.”
“A suitable space for media persons to meet and engage in discussions is vital,” said a senior KWJA journalist. “This will allow both senior and junior journalists to work together, ensuring that the larger interest of Kulgam is always represented.”
The newly formed 10-member core committee has been tasked with coordinating efforts to bring this vision to life. A spokesperson for the committee reiterated, “Our aim is clear: to establish a platform that fosters press freedom, encourages unity, and promotes professional development. We are hopeful that this collective effort will bring us closer to securing a Press Club for Kulgam.”
The associations have appealed to prominent political leaders, including Lt. Governor Manoj Sinha, Jammu and Kashmir Chief Minister Omar Abdullah, and Cabinet Minister Sakina Masood, to support their longstanding demand for a Press Club in the district, a request that has been pending since 2007.
