Kulgam, Nov,18: Kashmir is suddenly awakened to the urgent need to safeguard minors and children after a tragic road accident in the Natipora area of Srinagar, where two young boys lost their lives when their Thar vehicle collided with a tipper.

In recent days, traffic police, government officials, and citizens alike have raised alarms about the increasing number of accidents, particularly those involving minors. However, this incident is far from isolated. A growing and concerning trend has emerged, marked by the glorification of road rage, off beat racing, and stunt biking. What we are witnessing is not the beginning of a crisis, but potentially its devastating culmination.

In the first nine months of 2024 alone, Jammu Kashmir (J&K) has witnessed a staggering 8,914 road accidents. These accidents have claimed the lives of 1,242 people and left 12,224 others injured.

The rising number of accidents and fatalities, particularly among young people, is a pressing concern that demands immediate attention and collective action.

Addressing this issue demands a collective effort that goes beyond the responsibilities of law enforcement. It requires a concerted commitment from parents, educators, and the community.

While the law can regulate behavior, it is education that will foster a deeper understanding of why reckless driving is dangerous on so many levels, and why entrusting vehicles to minors is equally irresponsible.

Only through comprehensive awareness and accountability can we hope to curb this growing menace.

The Role of Parents and Communities

Parents play a critical role in preventing underage driving. It is their responsibility to ensure that their children are not allowed to drive before they are legally permitted.

Beyond supervision, parents must lead by example and instill a sense of responsibility in their children, highlighting the dangers of reckless driving, speeding, and ignoring traffic laws.

Equally important is their participation in educational programs that focus on road safety, emphasizing the serious consequences of underage driving and the importance of responsible behavior on the roads.

This responsibility extends to the wider community, including local religious and community leaders.

The Role of Law Enforcement

The Traffic Department must enforce stricter measures to tackle traffic violations, especially speeding and driving under the influence. Setting up checkpoints and conducting regular checks can help identify offenders before accidents happen. Moreover, when children are found violating traffic rules, their parents should be held accountable.

The police can also use technology, such as speed cameras and traffic monitoring systems, to further control reckless driving and ensure safer roads for all.

A Collective Responsibility and the Need to Act Now

Reducing road accidents requires a collective effort from all sectors of society, including law enforcement, communities, and families. It is not enough to react after a tragedy occurs.

Proactive measures such as educational initiatives that teach road safety from a young age, stronger law enforcement to punish violators, and greater community involvement are essential steps toward improving road safety.

Parents must also be vigilant in ensuring that their children are not allowed to drive irresponsibly.

Every life lost to road accidents is a tragedy that could have been prevented. The situation is dire, and if we don’t take action now, more young lives will be lost. It is time for us all to act—educate, enforce, and protect our youth from the devastating consequences of road accidents.
