Baramulla, Jan 29: Frustrated over a two-decade-long water crisis, residents of HanjiVeera in North Kashmir’s Pattan town of Baramulla district staged a protest on the Srinagar-Baramulla National Highway against the PHE Department on Wednesday.
Men and women gathered in large numbers, alleging that they have been forced to consume contaminated water for years, leading to a rise in waterborne diseases.
The demonstration disrupted traffic movement on the highway for some time.
Following the protest, Pattan police and officials, including Naib Tehsildar Pattan, arrived at the scene and assured the demonstrators that their grievances would be addressed soon. After receiving assurances from authorities, the protesters dispersed, and traffic was restored.
Inhabitants, however, warned of more intense protests if the long-pending issue is not resolved promptly. [KNT]
