Srinagar, Feb 20: In the heart of Khunmoh, Srinagar, 22-year-old multi-talented Mudasir Rashid is redefining the concept of waste by transforming discarded wood into exquisite art pieces. His journey from a novice craftsman to a celebrated artist is a testament to passion and perseverance.

“When I see any waste material, especially wood, I examine it closely,” Mudasir told news agency JKNS. “If I find potential in it, I take it, craft it, and turn it into art.” His keen eye for potential allows him to convert materials worth as little as ₹10 into creations valued in the thousands.

Mudasir’s foray into craftsmanship began serendipitously. “One day, I was just sitting, watching a craft video. I started copying it, made a piece of art, and gifted it to my friend,” he said. This initial success ignited a passion that grew daily.

Starting with a single machine, Mudasir’s dedication has expanded his workshop to include multiple tools. “Alhamdulillah, today I have many, and will get more. I’m working well,” he said with gratitude. Each piece he creates is priced based on the effort invested, with some fetching thousands of rupees. “The more you work on your craft, the more it rewards you,” he emphasized.

Beyond artistry, Mudasir is multifaceted, an engineering student, technician, craftsman, and bird seller. “Alhamdulillah, I do very well,” he remarked. Central to his success is unwavering family support. “My parents support me in everything I do. My father provides whatever I ask for,” he said.

He believes that divine support aligns with dedication. “Allah opens doors for those who work with passion. We need to concentrate,” he advised. Prioritizing work over distractions, Mudasir said, “Mobile phones give me nothing, but work gives me respect and whatever I need.”

Inspired by international artisans who turn scrap into art, Mudasir aspires to similar heights. “I saw a video where someone made a table worth approximately $49,000 from a wooden slice,” he said. “Why can’t we?”

Leveraging social media platforms like Facebook and Instagram, Mudasir showcases and sells his creations, which range from clocks and art birds to showpieces and daily-use items. Each piece reflects his commitment to turning trash into treasure. (JKNS)
