Srinagar, Mar 27: With Eid approaching, residents in several areas of Srinagar are facing an acute shortage of mutton, causing frustration among consumers.

Reports reaching news agency JKNS state that in some locations, butchers are selling mutton at an inflated price of ₹750 per kilogram, well above the government-approved rate.

Speaking to news agency JKNS, a local, Ghulam Muhammad, expressed his disappointment over the unavailability of mutton in key areas. “I searched for mutton in multiple places, including Habba Kadal and Dalgate, but most shops had run out by the afternoon. I don’t know what has happened. Eventually, I found one shop in Habba Kadal selling it, but at ₹750 per kg,” he said.

Another local, Rouf Hamid from Dalgate, shared a similar experience, stating that despite visiting several markets, he could not find mutton at regular rates. “Many shops were either closed or had no stock. The few that had mutton were charging excessive prices, making it difficult for common people to afford it,” he said.

A resident from Khayam, Sahil Ahmad, echoed the frustration, saying, “Every year, we face the same problem before Eid. Either mutton disappears, or the prices skyrocket. The authorities must step in to stop this exploitation.”

Residents have urged the government and the food department to intervene immediately, regulate prices, and ensure adequate supply ahead of Eid. They have called for strict action against butchers selling mutton at inflated rates, stressing the need for effective market monitoring to prevent exploitation. (JKNS)
