Srinagar, June 26, KNT: In observance of the International Day Against Drug Abuse and Illicit Trafficking, the Youth Development and Rehabilitation Centre (YDRC), Eidgah Srinagar, held an awareness program on Wednesday that brought together law enforcement officials, mental health professionals, and individuals in recovery to discuss the growing challenge of substance abuse and the path toward healing.

The event began with a welcome address by Dr. Muhammad Muzafer Khan, Director of YDRC, who greeted the dignitaries and participants and reaffirmed the center’s mission to fight drug addiction through prevention, treatment, and education.

The program was graced by the Chief Guest, Peer Zahoor Ahmad, Superintendent of Police and Staff Officer to DIG Central Kashmir Range (CKR). Other dignitaries present included Shri Showkat Ahmad (SP North), Junaid Wali (SDPO Khanyar), Mohamad Shafi (Administrative Officer), and Shri Showkat Ahmad (Private Secretary to DIG CKR).

Mental Health Counselor Ishfaq Qureshi delivered a powerful presentation on YDRC’s journey since its establishment in 2008, showcasing the center’s contributions to mental health, rehabilitation, and community awareness.

This year’s international theme, “Breaking the Chains: Prevention, Treatment and Recovery for All,” was explored in depth by Ms. Rumaisa, also a mental health counselor at YDRC. She emphasized the importance of inclusive and accessible de-addiction services and community support in breaking the cycle of substance abuse.

Addressing the gathering, SP North Showkat Ahmad highlighted the devastating impact of drugs on youth and society. He commended YDRC for its consistent service over the past 16 years, particularly its affordable and accessible rehabilitation care.

Chief Guest Peer Zahoor Ahmad urged society to adopt a proactive stance in combating drug addiction. “It is our collective responsibility to save lives from the clutches of drugs,” he said, encouraging collaboration between law enforcement, civil society, and rehabilitation institutions.

Participants, including recovering addicts and inpatients, spoke emotionally about their personal journeys and expressed gratitude to YDRC for offering them a second chance at life. Their testimonies served as a powerful reminder of the possibilities of recovery and resilience.

The event concluded with a vote of thanks by Dr. Muzafer Khan, who expressed appreciation to all guests, staff, and participants for making the program impactful. [KNT]
