Baramulla, July 9 : The Yamberzalwari–Harwan road in north Kashmir’s Baramulla district has fallen into a dilapidated state, leaving over 1,200 residents of the area struggling with daily commutes amid worsening road conditions.

A group of locals from the area told that the nearly 10-kilometre stretch has not seen macadamization since 2002. Large potholes, eroded edges, and water accumulation have rendered the road nearly unmotorable, particularly during rains.

Residents said the prolonged neglect has disrupted transport, damaged vehicles, and made it difficult for patients, students, and the elderly to travel safely.

Officials in the Roads and Buildings (R&B) Department told that restoration work is currently underway but cited lack of NOC from the forest department a hurdle.

“Budget allocations for this project have been made over the years, but they lapse due to the absence of a No Objection Certificate (NOC) from the Forest Department,” the officials said.

Residents have urged authorities to treat the matter as urgent. “This is not just a road, it’s a lifeline for several villages. For 20 years, we’ve been hearing promises but seeing no action. It’s high time the government steps in,” said Mohd Ramzan and Wazeer Mohd, local residents.

When contacted, DFO Kamraj Division Zahglii Kupwara, Anurag Arya told , “We need proper application through the department, then we will send it to higher authorities for permission of NOC. But they haven’t applied yet.”

The affected population has appealed to the Lieutenant Governor, the Omar Abdullah-led government, and the district administration for intervention to ensure swift allocation of funds and full-scale road repair. (JKNS)
