KUPWARA, JULY 19: The Motor Vehicle Department (MVD) Kupwara on Saturday conducted a major enforcement drive across multiple routes in the district, imposing fines amounting to ₹2.10 lakh for various traffic violations under the Motor Vehicles Act.

During the day-long operation, enforcement teams inspected over 350 vehicles across key routes including Kupwara–Lolab, Kupwara–Tangdhar, Kupwara–Sopore, Kupwara–Sogam, Kupwara–Kralpora, Kupwara–Kalaroos, and Kupwara–Handwara.

The enforcement drive led to the e-challaning of 116 vehicles for a range of offences such as over-speeding, driving without seatbelts or helmets, overcharging of fares, non-functional Speed Limiting Devices (SLDs), plying without route permits, and absence of High-Security Registration Plates (HSRPs). Furthermore, 35 vehicles were blacklisted, and recommendations were made for suspension of six driving licenses and three road permits — all within a single day.

Giving further details, ARTO Kupwara, Mohammad Shafait, stated that the drive was part of an intensified statewide enforcement campaign, being undertaken as per the directions of Transport Commissioner J&K, Vishesh Paul Mahajan. He added that similar drives will be regularly carried out throughout the district to promote road safety and ensure strict adherence to traffic regulations.

ARTO Shafait urged drivers and commuters to strictly follow traffic rules and adopt road safety practices to help reduce accidents and protect lives.

The enforcement drive was conducted by teams operating under the direct supervision of ARTO Kupwara, and led on-ground by MVI Waheed Ul Islam, MVI Karan Kumar, AMVI Arun Kaw, and SMVI Adil Ahmad.
