Kulgam, July 20: A 38-year-old man sustained injuries in a bear attack on Sunday morning in the Devsar area of south Kashmir’s Kulgam district, officials said.

The injured has been identified as Shabir Ahmad Shah, son of Ghulam Ahmad Shah, a resident of Qasba Devsar. According to officials, the incident occurred when Shabir was on his way to his orchard to spray pesticides and was suddenly attacked by a wild bear.

Locals present nearby rushed to his aid and immediately shifted him to the Primary Health Centre (PHC) Devsar, where he was given initial treatment. He was later referred to the District Hospital Kulgam for further medical attention. Officials stated that his condition is currently stable.

Following the incident, the Wildlife Department Devsar, under the supervision of Incharge Imtiyaz Ahmad, launched a search operation in the area. A cage has also been installed in an effort to trap the bear and prevent further incidents.

Authorities have urged residents in the vicinity to remain cautious and report any sightings of the wild animal.
