Poonch, Sept 29: An Army soldier was killed on Monday evening after a grenade explosion occurred inside the headquarters of 16 Rashtriya Rifles in Surankote area of Jammu and Kashmir’s Poonch district.

Officials said that the blast took place around 7:45 p.m. and led to the death of a soldier.

Officials added that it is not immediately clear whether the incident was caused by a militant attack or resulted from an accidental blast. “Investigations are underway. At this stage, it would be premature to draw conclusions about the nature of the incident.”.

Soon after the explosion, teams from Jammu and Kashmir Police rushed to the site and initiated preliminary investigations. The area was cordoned off, and forensic specialists were called in to examine the spot.

Police officials confirmed that all angles are being examined, including the possibility of an accidental handling error or technical malfunction. “The cause of the blast is under verification. A case has been registered and further investigations are on,” they said. [KNT]
