Srinagar, Dec 26: The reservation controversy in Jammu and Kashmir took a sharp political turn on Thursday after Chief Minister Omar Abdullah issued a strong response to statements made by National Conference MP Aga Ruhullah Mehdi.
According to sources, the Chief Minister made it clear that he will not bow to any kind of pressure or threats while dealing with the sensitive issue of reservation.
CM Omar Abdullah said: I am not afraid of anyone’s threats, nor will I take any wrong decision under pressure. I don’t know what you think of yourself. He further stated that matters like reservation policy cannot be settled through intimidation or street pressure, and must be addressed within the constitutional and legal framework after proper consultation with all stakeholders.
It is pertinent to mention that Aga Ruhullah Mehdi had recently warned the government that if it fails to engage with protesting students by December 27 would personally join their agitation. His remarks had created ripples in political circles across the region.
Political observers believe that unless dialogue begins soon between the government and the aggrieved students, the situation may escalate further in the coming days.
