New Delhi, May 11: Prime Minister Narendra Modi has urged all government, private and aided schools across the country to shift to online classes. The appeal came hours after the Prime Minister advised citizens to adopt cost-cutting measures such as avoiding gold purchases, postponing foreign travel and opting for work from home amid economic concerns. Modi also suggested that schools and colleges follow a Covid-19-style online learning model for the time being.

Modi made this suggestion while inaugurating the Sardardham Hostel complex in Vadodara. This new complex can accommodate 2,000 students with equal facilities for boys and girls. This facility also has amenities such as dining hall, library and auditorium.

PM Modi made this statement as the country grapples with the economic fallout of the ongoing Iran-US war and surging crude oil prices. A similar statement was made by the PM in a rally in Hyderabad on May 10 (Sunday). Addressing a BJP rally in Hyderabad, PM Modi said India must conserve foreign exchange reserves and reduce fuel consumption as global supply chains remain under pressure due to the prolonged conflict in West Asia.

In this rally, PM has also advised companies to return to Work-From-Home (WFH) arrangements online conferences and virtual meetings. He also urged people to significantly reduce petrol and diesel consumption to help conserve foreign exchange and reduce import dependence. He has advised citizens to use metro rail and public transport wherever possible, and opt for car-pooling when private vehicles are needed. He is also encouraging people to switch to electrical vehicles.

Additionally, PM advised families to reduce edible oil consumption, saying it would benefit both the country’s economic health and people’s personal health.

His appeal to Indians comes a little after US President Donald Trump rejected Iran’s latest peace proposals, which pushed global crude oil prices above $105 a barrel, and have intensified concerns over inflation and energy security worldwide.(TOI)
