Keran records 3,000 daily footfall, emerges as J&K’s fastest-growing border tourism destination

Keran, July 07: Once a sleepy village along the Line of Control, Keran in north Kashmir has scripted a remarkable turnaround, emerging as one of the Union Territory’s fastest-growing tourism hotspots with over 3,000 domestic tourists arriving daily.

The picturesque village, known for its pristine landscapes and the crystal-clear waters of the Kishanganga River, has witnessed an unprecedented surge in visitor footfall over the past few months. Families, nature enthusiasts, trekkers and adventure seekers from across the country are thronging the region, making it one of the most sought-after destinations in North Kashmir.

The revival of tourism in Keran, officials said, reflects the successful synergy between the Indian Army and the Civil Administration, whose coordinated efforts have transformed the once-remote border outpost into a safe, accessible and welcoming destination. Improved connectivity, robust security arrangements and efficient visitor management have earned appreciation from tourists, many of whom are now recommending the destination to others.

“The response has been overwhelming. Tourists are coming in large numbers to experience the unique charm of border tourism and the natural beauty of this place,” a senior civil administration official told news agency Kashmir News Service (KNS).

However, the exponential growth in tourist arrivals has also exposed critical gaps in public infrastructure, raising concerns among stakeholders about the destination’s carrying capacity.

With the daily footfall crossing the 3,000-mark, there is a growing demand for strengthening civic amenities in the area. Officials acknowledged that additional public toilets, modern washroom facilities, clean drinking water stations, passenger shelters, parking areas and waste disposal systems are urgently required to cater to the rising number of visitors.

Improved mobile connectivity, tourist help desks, information kiosks, directional signboards and night street lighting are among the other necessities that authorities are being urged to prioritise.

“The existing infrastructure is under considerable strain. We need to expand facilities in line with the growing demand if we want to sustain this momentum and establish Keran as a model for sustainable border tourism,” the official added.

Officials emphasised that stronger coordination among the Jammu and Kashmir Police, Border Security Force (BSF), Civil Administration and other concerned agencies is essential to manage the growing tourist influx effectively. Traffic regulation, crowd management, tourist assistance and emergency response mechanisms need to be strengthened to ensure smooth movement of visitors and reinforce the sense of safety that has become Keran’s greatest strength.

Environmental conservation remains a key priority, with officials stressing the need for cleanliness drives, scientific waste management, plastic-free initiatives and awareness campaigns to preserve Keran’s fragile ecosystem.

The tourism boom is also generating significant economic opportunities for local residents. Increased visitor numbers are creating employment in hospitality, transport, handicrafts, local cuisine, homestays and guiding services, providing sustainable livelihoods and boosting the region’s economy.

“The growth of tourism offers tremendous opportunities for inclusive development while showcasing the warmth, culture and traditions of our border communities,” a local stakeholder said.

Keran, officials believe, now stands at a defining moment in its tourism journey. With timely investments in infrastructure, stronger inter-agency coordination and a shared commitment to sustainable development, the border destination has the potential to emerge as one of India’s finest tourism success stories.

“The administration is committed to developing Keran as a world-class destination that reflects the beauty, resilience and aspirations of Jammu and Kashmir’s border communities,” the official added.

By working collectively, authorities and local residents are aiming to ensure that every visitor leaves Keran with memories of unmatched natural beauty, exceptional hospitality and a safe, comfortable experience. (KNS).
