Heavy rainfall likely to trigger flash floods in south kashmir on July 21: I&FC Kashmir issues advisory

Srinagar, July 20: The Irrigation and Flood Control (I&FC) Department Kashmir on Monday issued a public advisory warning of a significantly strong spell of rainfall over the Jhelum Basin on July 21, with the India Meteorological Department (IMD) forecasting heavy precipitation that could trigger flash floods and a rapid rise in water levels across South Kashmir.

According to the advisory, a copy of which lies with news agency JKNS, heavy rainfall ranging between 50 mm and 100 mm is expected, particularly in the districts of Anantnag, Kulgam and Shopian, during the morning of July 21, followed by another spell of comparatively lower-intensity rainfall on the morning of July 22.

The department warned that the forecast weather conditions may lead to flash floods and a sudden rise in water levels in channels, khuls, nallahs and other watercourses, especially in the higher reaches and hilly areas of South Kashmir.

It further stated that the rising inflows are also expected to increase water levels in the major tributaries and the River Jhelum, urging people to remain alert.

The I&FC Department advised the public, particularly residents of South Kashmir, to avoid venturing near rivers, nallahs, khuls, water channels and other flood-prone areas, especially in upper reaches and hilly regions.

The advisory also urged people to avoid unnecessary travel to vulnerable locations and called upon residents of low-lying areas to remain vigilant, take all precautionary measures and regularly follow official weather and flood advisories issued by the authorities.

The advisory has been issued by Chief Engineer, Irrigation & Flood Control Department Kashmir, Er. Shewkat Hussain, in the interest of public safety. (JKNS)
