Committee proposes interactions with universities, judiciary; plans study visit to Kerala Assembly
Srinagar, Jul 28: The Ethics Committee of the Jammu and Kashmir Legislative Assembly met at the Assembly Secretariat in Srinagar on Tuesday under the chairmanship of MLA Nizam-ud-Din Bhat to discuss parliamentary ethics, legislative conduct and measures to strengthen ethical standards in public life.
Bhat highlighted the Committee’s role in safeguarding the dignity and decorum of the House and ensuring high standards of conduct and discipline among legislators. He stressed the importance of accountability, transparency and integrity in strengthening public confidence in democratic institutions.
The Chairman proposed interaction programmes with students and faculty of the Law and Political Science departments at the University of Kashmir and University of Jammu to promote awareness about parliamentary ethics and democratic values and seek academic perspectives on the role and responsibilities of legislators.
He also proposed a visit to the High Court of Jammu & Kashmir and Ladakh for interaction with the Chief Justice and other judges on ethical standards in public life and governance.
The Committee unanimously endorsed the proposals and resolved to undertake a study visit to the Kerala Legislative Assembly to interact with its Ethics Committee and examine its functioning and practices. The visit is proposed for the third week of August, subject to approval by the competent authority and completion of administrative formalities.
The meeting was attended by Committee members Ghulam Mohi-ud-Din Mir, Salman Sagar, Hilal Akbar Lone, Zafar Ali Khatana, Peerzada Feroz Ahmad, Satish Kumar Sharma, Surinder Kumar, Randhir Singh and Arvind Gupta.
Legislative Assembly officials, including Under Secretary Shabir Ahmad Wani and Incharge Committees Naqeeb Jeelani, were also present.
