NCDC Core Committee Discusses Early Identification and Intervention for Developmental Delays in Children
Share:

Srinagar, July 29: The Core Committee of the National Child Development Council (NCDC) met in order to discuss the problem of developmental delays in children and the steps needed to enable them to reach their expected developmental milestones. The committee members expressed their views on the increasing difficulties concerning child development and emphasized the need for early identification, early intervention, and shared responsibility in promoting children’s overall development.

In the course of the discussion, the members noted that developmental delays in the areas of speech, motor skills, cognitive abilities, and social-emotional development are becoming more and more apparent in children. There was concern that children might be subjected to academic pressure before they are developmentally ready, as this could have a negative impact on both their learning experiences and their emotional well-being.

They stressed that early childhood is a vital stage for establishing the basis of lifelong learning and development and pointed out the important role of teachers in observing the progress of children’s development, stating that teachers who have the proper knowledge are able to detect developmental problems at an early stage and communicate these to parents so that timely support and intervention can take place.

The committee also talked about the importance of carrying out developmental screening in the early years of childhood. It was suggested that age-appropriate developmental assessments should be carried out before children enter school and at various stages of early childhood in order to aid the early identification of any developmental problems. It was pointed out that developmental milestone assessments could be incorporated into regular health check-ups in order to further enhance early intervention efforts.

A number of factors which contribute to developmental delays were discussed, such as genetic conditions, nutritional deficiencies, neurological causes, lack of parental involvement, too much time spent in front of screens, and fewer opportunities for play and social interaction. The group noted that changes in family structure and the fact that people have more work to do often mean that there is less time for parents to keep a close eye on their children’s development.

The conversation highlighted how important the first three years of a child’s life are for brain development. It was emphasized that parents and caregivers should know about developmental milestones and about ways of teaching that are suitable for a child’s age so as to be able to give better support to children during this crucial period. Moreover, some suggestions were made concerning measures that are suitable for families and which would allow parents to spend meaningful time with their children.

The importance of play-based learning in improving children’s motor skills, their ability to solve problems, their self-control, and their social development was also pointed out. The observers noted that safe and meaningful chances for play and social interaction make a significant contribution to children’s general development.

The committee also talked about the effect of emotional well-being on child development, pointing out that adverse childhood experiences and emotional distress can have an effect on communication skills and on developmental outcomes. It was agreed by the members that it is essential to identify problems early on and to put in place suitable support measures if such difficulties are to be dealt with effectively.

To conclude the meeting, the Core Committee stressed that developmental delays can usually be successfully dealt with as a result of timely intervention and through cooperative efforts by families, educators, healthcare professionals, and society. The members again underlined the need to promote children’s all-round development in order that they may achieve their full potential.
