Police Allege PDP Leader bit officer, caused bleeding injury while resisting restrictions; investigation underway

Srinagar, Aug 6 : Srinagar Police have registered an FIR and summoned PDP leader Iltija Mufti to join the investigation after alleging that she assaulted and bit a police officer during a protest in Srinagar, leaving him with a bleeding injury while security personnel were enforcing restrictions.

Official sources told news agency JKNS, the incident occurred on the evening of August 4 during a protest organised by the People’s Democratic Party (PDP) at S.K. Park, led by former Chief Minister Mehbooba Mufti and Iltija Mufti.

Official sources said a section of the protesters allegedly attempted to violate imposed restrictions by blocking Residency Road and marching towards Lal Chowk.

The official sources said adequate male and female police personnel deployed at the venue repeatedly appealed to the protesters to maintain peace and comply with lawful directions. However, a group allegedly tried to breach police barricades and obstruct security personnel engaged in maintaining law and order.

During the ensuing scuffle, official sources alleged that Iltija Mufti physically assaulted a police officer while he was discharging his official duties. She is further accused of grabbing the officer and biting his forearm, causing a bleeding injury.

The injured officer was immediately shifted to a hospital, where he received treatment, including wound management, anti-rabies vaccination, tetanus prophylaxis and other protocol-based medical care, official sources said.

Taking serious note of the alleged assault on a public servant and obstruction of lawful police action, Srinagar Police registered FIR No. 63/2026 at Police Station Kothibagh and initiated a comprehensive investigation, official sources said.

Official sources further said that as part of the ongoing investigation, Iltija Mufti has been summoned to appear before Police Station Kothibagh on Tomorrow to join the investigation in accordance with law.

The investigation is in progress, and legal action will be taken against all those found involved in the alleged assault on police personnel and obstruction of public servants in the discharge of their official duties, official sources added. (JKNS)
