Srinagar, October 16: Malik Sumeed, Managing Editor of Kashmir News Bureau (KNB), has successfully completed the Defence Correspondents Course (DCC) 2026, organised by the Ministry of Defence, Government of India.
Sumeed was theonly journalist selected from Kashmir for the prestigious course, which brought together 24 journalists from across the country for specialised training and first-hand exposure to India’s defence establishment.
The selection process involved a proper screening procedure followed by video interviews, through which candidates were assessed before the final list of participants was drawn up.
Among the other selected journalists was Sumit Bhargav of Greater Kashmir, who hails from the Rajouri area of Jammu and Kashmir.
The successful completion of the course marks a significant professional milestone for Sumeed, providing him with specialised exposure to defence affairs, military operations and the functioning of India’s armed forces.
The three-week programme, conducted from September 21 to October 10, 2026, covered the Indian Navy, Indian Air Force and Indian Army, offering participants opportunities to interact with defence personnel, attend specialised briefings and visit military establishments.
The Navy module in Visakhapatnam familiarised journalists with maritime security, naval operations and the functioning of naval establishments, including exposure to ships and submarines.
The Air Force phase in Tezpur, Assam, provided insights into the operational responsibilities and capabilities of the Indian Air Force, while the Army module included engagements in the Tenga and Tawang areas of Arunachal Pradesh, where participants received briefings on military preparedness and the challenges associated with serving in forward areas.
The course also highlighted the importance of responsible defence journalism, accurate reporting, verification of information and sensitivity towards operational security and national interests.
The programme concluded with a valedictory ceremony at Tezpur, chaired by Lieutenant General Neeraj Shukla, General Officer Commanding, Gajraj Corps. Vijay Kumar, Additional Director General (Media and Communication), Ministry of Defence, and other officials were also associated with the concluding programme.
Sumeed’s participation as the sole selected journalist from Kashmir highlights his professional engagement with defence and security reporting. The specialised training is expected to further strengthen his understanding of military affairs and contribute to more informed reporting on defence-related developments, particularly those concerning Jammu and Kashmir.
The Defence Correspondents Course is aimed at enhancing journalists’ understanding of India’s armed forces and enabling them to report on defence and national security matters with greater accuracy, depth and professional responsibility.
