Srinagar, Oct 25: Chief Minister Omar Abdullah on Sunday flagged off the 3rd edition of the Kashmir International Marathon in Srinagar, bringing together runners from across the country and abroad in an event aimed at promoting sports, tourism and Kashmir’s international profile.
The marathon has attracted 1,807 online registrations, including 1,221 local participants, 513 runners from other parts of the country and 73 foreign athletes representing 12 countries, with the Tourism Department expecting participation to cross 2,000.
The full marathon, covering 42.195 kilometres, was scheduled to begin at 6:30 am, followed by the 21-kilometre half marathon at 7:45 am.
As per official figures, preparations for the event were complete, with road repairs, barricading and arrangements along the route undertaken to ensure its smooth conduct.
The routes take runners through some of Srinagar’s prominent locations, including stretches around Dal Lake, Boulevard Road and Nishat Garden, showcasing the Valley’s natural beauty and cultural heritage.
Officials said the marathon is intended to become an annual sporting event, providing local athletes an opportunity to compete alongside national and international participants while promoting Kashmir as a destination for sporting events.
A separate prize category for Jammu and Kashmir runners has also been introduced to encourage local participation and provide regional athletes greater opportunities to showcase their talent.
The Marathon Expo, inaugurated by the Chief Minister, featured 20 stalls showcasing local handicrafts, handlooms, agricultural produce and other products, offering local businesses a platform to reach visitors and participants.
Meanwhile, Srinagar Traffic Police has announced extensive traffic restrictions and diversions to facilitate the event. Commuters have been advised to plan their journeys in advance, follow traffic advisories and use designated alternative routes.
Emergency vehicles, including ambulances and fire tenders, will be prioritised during the restrictions. People requiring traffic-related assistance can contact the Srinagar Traffic Police helpline at 103. (JKNS)
