Two gunfights in South Kashmir’s Pulwama and Shopian district ended on Tuesday with the killing of five militants.

A gunfight had raged in Melhora village of South Kashmir’s Shopian district yesterday. The operation continued for the second day on Monday, said an official adding that two bodies from the encounter site were recovered.

Dozens of youth pelted stones on the combined forces manning outer cordon area.

“Two militants were killed in the encounter. One AK-47 rifle along with 2 magazines, one Pistol along with 1 magazine and 2 pouches were recovered from the encounter site,” said an official.

Giving details about the gunfight, the official told KNT that after receiving inputs about the presence of militants in Melhora village, soldiers from 55 RR, 178 Battalion CRPF and Police Shopian cordoned off the village. The search operation converted into gunfight.

During encounter, 2 militants were eliminated. Arms and ammunition was recovered from the encounter site. After completion of medico andlegal formalities, dead bodies of slain militants were sent to Sheeri Baramulla for burial.

The militants were identified as Towseef Ahmad Khanday son of Abdul Salam Khanday resident of

Hangulbuch Kulgam and Umar Thoker son of Gulzar Ahmad Thoker resident of Shiganpora Kulgam, both affiliated with proscribed outfit HM. Both of them were involved in recent attacks in Kulgam-Shopian areas,” said the spokesman.

“Incriminating materials including arms and ammunition were recovered from the site

of encounter. All the recovered materials have been taken into case records for further

investigation and to probe his complicity in other terror crimes,” he said.

A case vide FIR number number 138/2020 under section 307 IPC, 7/27 Arms Act, 16 ULAP Act registered and investigation taken up.

In another encounter at Hakripora area of South Kahsmir’s Pulwama district, three unidentified militants were killed on Tuesday.

The gunfight was underway till the filing of this report. KNT
