Srinagar, June 28: Awami Ittehad Party (AIP) expressed appreciation for President Draupadi Murmu’s recognition of the substantial voter turnout in Kashmir during the recent elections while urging her to respect the electorate’s decision. AIP highlighted that residents of Baramulla notably doubled their voting numbers to support Er Rashid, who is currently detained in Tihar jail without having been able to assume office.

Firdous Baba, spokesperson for AIP, emphasized that true appreciation for the people of Kashmir would entail allowing Er Rashid to be released from jail to effectively represent his constituency in Parliament, akin to other elected parliamentarians.

This call follows President Murmu’s remarks in Parliament where she acknowledged the historic voter engagement in Jammu and Kashmir, emphasizing the region’s “departure from past low turnouts due to local disruptions.”

President Murmu, highlighted the high voter turnout as a robust response to narratives “propagated by adversaries of India” on the global stage, suggesting it reflected the electorate’s proactive participation in shaping democratic processes.

AIP urged a reconsideration of Er Rashid’s detention in light of his electoral mandate. The party’s call for his release aims to ensure that constituents’ voices are duly represented in the Parliament.

“We have faith in Honourable President that she will personally look in the matter of Er Rashid and allow him to walk out of jail at the earliest. Honourable President is independent and represent people across the country. We believe that she will use her position to deliver justice to the leader who has been sent by people of Kashmir to represent them in the Parliament,” Baba said in a statement.
