Srinagar, Jan 8 : National Conference leader and Member of Parliament Rahullah Mehdi has cast doubts on the near-term restoration of Jammu and Kashmir’s statehood, alleging that the current governance framework is designed to sideline an elected government in favor of the Lieutenant Governor’s authority.

Speaking on the issue, Mehdi accused the BJP of structuring a system that minimizes the role of an elected administration. “Even if Omar Abdullah becomes the Chief Minister, his powers would be overshadowed by the Lieutenant Governor. Whenever the Chief Minister calls a meeting, the LG holds a similar one soon after, reinforcing the perception that real authority rests elsewhere,” he remarked.

He also pointed to ambiguities in the business rules, stating that the lack of clarity further complicates governance and weakens the position of elected representatives.

Mehdi went on to accuse the BJP of deliberately disempowering the people of Jammu and Kashmir, asserting that the party’s approach dismisses the democratic mandate given to the National Conference.

“This is a systematic attempt to undermine the political voice of J&K’s people. The BJP’s strategy reflects a disregard for their aspirations and their right to self-governance,” he asserted.

Responding to a question, Mehdi advised NC leader Omar Abdullah to remain firmly connected with public sentiment, emphasizing that the party’s mandate comes with great responsibility.

“If Omar Abdullah distances himself from the expectations of the people, he risks being seen as representing Delhi’s interests rather than those of Jammu and Kashmir,” Mehdi cautioned.

He further urged the central government to acknowledge and respect the strong public support for the National Conference, warning that dismissing the people’s mandate could have serious implications for India’s democratic fabric.

Mehdi also voiced concerns about the BJP’s willingness to address public demands, suggesting that Omar Abdullah’s leadership would ultimately be measured by his commitment to the restoration of statehood and Article 370.

“The people fear that their expectations will go unmet. Omar Abdullah must lead the fight for statehood and Article 370’s restoration or risk being perceived as a mere extension of Delhi’s influence,” he concluded. (KNS)
