Srinagar, Feb 15: A family in Gurwait Kalan, Khansahib area of Central Kashmir’s Budgam district locked the Primary Health Centre on Saturday in protest against the alleged failure of the government to fulfill a promise of employment and compensation in exchange for their land.

The head of the family, Zaina Begum, claimed that in 2007, the Health Department had taken three kanals of land from her for the establishment of the PHC with the assurance that a government job would be provided to a family member. However, she alleged that despite the passage of nearly 18 years, the commitment remains unfulfilled.

“The health officials of that time had assured us of a job and compensation, but their promises have not been kept. This land is situated in a prime location, and its price has significantly increased over the years,” Zaina Begum told the news agency Kashmir News Trust.

She further said that her family, primarily dependent on farming, lost its only source of livelihood due to the land acquisition. “This was our lone source of income, and now we are struggling to sustain ourselves,” she added.

When contacted the Block Medical Officer Khansahib, Dr. Sajad, acknowledged the issue and said, “We are ready if the health department provides the promised compensation and employment to the affected families. The decision, however, rests with the higher authorities.” [KNT]
