Srinagar, Feb 17: Amid the low precipitation, the officials on Monday assured that the wildlife in Dachigam National Park remains ‘unaffected’.

A top official, while speaking to the news agency—Kashmir News Observer (KNO), stated that the impact of the ongoing water crisis on wildlife was “negligible”.

He said that most of the park’s wildlife resides in the southern aspects of the region, where water remains accessible. “There is adequate snowfall in higher reaches like Gulmarg, Sonmarg, Baltal, and the upper areas of Dachigam, ensuring a steady water supply for wild animals,” he said.

He further clarified that while the human population might face difficulties due to reduced water levels, the ecological balance remains intact. “Nature has its own system—first, wild animals and plants sustain themselves, and then human settlements follow,” he said.

He said that the changing climate has altered the movement patterns of animals in winter, stating that previously, heavy snowfall forced animals to migrate to lower elevations in search of food. However, this winter, with relatively less snowfall in some areas, animals have been able to find food at medium elevations, reducing their downward movement.

The official also highlighted that vegetation was expected to flourish due to early foliage, ensuring ample food availability for wildlife.

“The ecosystem is functioning naturally, and wildlife will not face any crisis due to water scarcity,” he said.

While the wildlife officials currently dismiss concerns over water scarcity for wildlife, the concerns, however, remain regarding the overall water availability for human consumption, as depleting water sources continue to worry residents across the valley—(KNO)
