Budgam, 19 August: In a significant boost to Kashmir’s handicrafts sector, the Director of Handicrafts and Handloom, Kashmir, Ms. Mussarat Zia, visited Sonpah, Beerwah, to inspect the development of the newly designated Craft Tourism Village, following its recent recognition by the Central Government.
The visit marks a milestone in the promotion of traditional crafts in the region, with Sonpah becoming the second village in Kashmir, after Kanihama, to receive the prestigious Craft Village status.
During the visit, the Director conducted a thorough review of the ongoing construction and development works. The project, with a total outlay of ₹10 crore, is aimed at preserving and promoting traditional Kashmiri crafts, particularly Sozni embroidery, while creating sustainable livelihood opportunities for local artisans.
The Government of India has already sanctioned the project under the National Handicrafts Development Programme (NHDP), releasing an initial installment of ₹4.5 crore through the Infrastructure and Technology Support Scheme. The project is being executed by the Department of Handicrafts and Handloom, Kashmir, with funds routed via the Central Cottage Industries Corporation of India (CCIC).
Sonpah village is home to 22 acclaimed artisans, many of whom have received UT-level awards and prestigious Shilp Guru honors. During the visit, these artisans gathered to welcome the Director and expressed their gratitude to the Central Government for recognizing their craft legacy and providing infrastructural support.
A departmental spokesperson commented: “We are thankful to the Central Government for recognizing Sonpah’s unique contribution to Sozni craft. This initiative will connect our artisans directly with markets and tourists while preserving a centuries-old tradition.”
Strategically located en route to the tourist hotspots of Doodhpathri and Tossa Maidan, the Sonpah Craft Village will offer tourists immersive, hands-on experiences with Kashmir’s crafts and culture.
