Srinagar, Oct 16: Reports of unexpected flowering and leaf sprouting in apple, almond, and other fruit trees across Kashmir have sparked speculation among farmers and locals about a possible connection to climate change.

However, agricultural experts have clarified that the phenomenon is a natural stress reaction in plants, not a sign of changing climate patterns.

According to horticulture scientists, unseasonal growth usually occurs when trees experience stress caused by pest attacks, diseases, or other environmental pressures.

“This is a physiological response,” explained Dr. Tariq Rasool to news agency JKNS.

“When favorable weather follows a period of stress, some buds meant for the next season may open prematurely during the same year,” he said.

Dr. Rasool noted that such instances have been recorded for decades.

“Even in the 1980s, people used to see almond trees bloom out of season and wonder why. It’s not a new phenomenon, it’s simply nature’s way of responding to stress,” Dr. Rasool said.

He further advised growers not to overreact by irrigating or applying fertilizers, warning that such actions could trigger more premature budding.

Experts recommend allowing the trees to return to their natural dormancy cycle, assuring that the temporary flush of flowers and leaves will subside on its own. (JKNS)
