Srinagar, Nov 29: Deputy Chief Minister Surinder Choudhary on Saturday said that the Jammu Development Authority (JDA) must clarify who authorised the demolition carried out at the residence of journalist Arfaz Daing in Jammu, adding that any officer involved in the act will be held accountable.

Speaking to reporters, Choudhary as per news agency Kashmir News Corner — KNC said he was conveying the stand of Chief Minister Omar Abdullah, stressing that the CM has never supported actions motivated by personal vendetta. He said the administration works strictly within the framework of the Constitution and values the role of the press.

Deputy CM, who visited the journalist’s home, stated that Omar Abdullah had already made it clear that the government had not sanctioned the demolition. “JDA must explain on whose orders this step was taken,” he said.

Choudhary asserted that Arfaz Daing had every right to express his opinions and publish his work. “Silencing journalists strikes at the very foundation of democracy,” he said, warning that any misuse of power to intimidate people will not be tolerated.

He added that the demolition caused immense distress to the affected family, stressing that authorities often overlook the human impact of such actions.

The government will take strict action against anyone found responsible for issuing unlawful directions, and a thorough inquiry has been assured, he said. (KNC)
