Srinagar, Dec 27 : Two boys from Srinagar sustained severe burn injuries after coming into contact with a live high-tension electric wire while taking selfies atop a parked train at the railway station yard in Budgam on Friday, a Railway official told the news agency Kashmir News Trust.

According to officials, the injured boys had climbed onto an ART, an Accidental Relief Train, which was parked in the Budgam railway yard. While taking photographs from the roof of the stationary train, they accidentally came into contact with a live overhead high-tension electric line.

Both injured youths were immediately shifted to SMHS Hospital Srinagar for treatment. Hospital sources said the boys suffered serious burn injuries due to the electric shock.

The injured were identified as Reyan Ahmad Dar, son of Shameem Ahmad Dar, a 16-year-old resident of Marajpora Batamaloo, whose condition was stated to be critical, and Arbaz Ahmad Dar, son of Mehrajdin Dar, a 20-year-old resident of the same area, who is reported to be in stable condition.

Officials said the overhead electric traction lines used for railway operations carry extremely high voltage and pose a grave risk. Even brief contact or close proximity can result in severe burns and life-threatening injuries.

Police have taken cognizance of the incident and further details are being ascertained.

Railway authorities have once again appealed to the public, particularly youth, to strictly avoid climbing railway coaches or infrastructure for photography or recreation, warning that such actions can lead to serious and irreversible injuries. [KNT]
