Jammu, Jul 7: Heavy monsoon rains triggered flash floods and mudslides in Thathri town of Doda district on Tuesday, damaging dozens of houses, shops, and vehicles, while forcing the closure of the strategic Doda-Kishtwar National Highway (NH-244).

The floodwaters, laden with mud and debris, swirled through several residential and commercial localities, submerging properties and sweeping away multiple vehicles, including some four-wheelers and two-wheelers, eyewitnesses told news agency Kashmir News Service (KNS).

Public infrastructure, including power supply lines and water pipes, also suffered extensive damage in the affected areas.

A senior district administration official told news agency Kashmir News Service (KNS) no loss of life has been reported so far. “Relief and rescue teams have been rushed to the spot. A detailed assessment of the damage is being carried out,” the official said, adding that temporary shelters have been set up for affected families.

Meanwhile, the NH-244, a vital link connecting Doda and Kishtwar districts, remained blocked at several points due to landslides and mudslides triggered by the incessant rain. Hundreds of vehicles, including those carrying essential supplies, were stranded along the route.

“Restoration work is in progress, but operations are being hampered by continuous rainfall and slush,” a Border Roads Organisation (BRO) official said, advising commuters to avoid the stretch until further notice.

Notably, The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has forecast more rainfall in the region over the next 24 hours, prompting the administration to issue an advisory urging residents to stay away from riverbanks and landslide-prone zones. (KNS)
