Kulgam, Dec 6: In South Kashmir’s Kulgam district, farmers found pebbles mixed with fertilizer in bags supplied under the Bhartiya Jan Urvarak Pariyojna. The issue came to light when one of the farmers Muhammad Sultan, purchased ‘Di Amonium’ Phosphate from a dealer in Bogund and was stunned to find that 80% of the contents were pebbles, with only 20% being actual fertilizer.

The farmer’s complaint prompted Agricultural Enforcement Officer Malik Ayaz to take swift action, sealing the fertilizers and confiscating the remaining stock of the same brand.

While talking to the news agency Kashmir News Trust, the Enforcement Officer said that samples have been sent to the Lal Mandi Srinagar-based laboratory for further analysis. Malik Ayaz confirmed that a show-cause notice has been issued to both the shopkeeper and the company responsible for supplying and selling sub-standard fertilizers.

He said: “I checked the fertilizer myself and found 80% pebbles. This a a serios issue and we have taken cognizance.”

The incident has sparked outrage among farmers, who are demanding stern action against the dealer and the company. The Enforcement Officer assured that farmers will receive refunds if the lab report confirms the fertilizers are indeed sub-standard.

An orchadist Abdul Salam said that this incident highlights concerns about the quality of agricultural inputs in the district, which can significantly impact crop yields and their livelihoods. He said the presence of sub-standard fertilizers necessitates stricter quality control measures.

Another farmer, Ghulam Hasan said that they rely heavily on fertilizers to maintain soil fertility and support crop growth, making it essential to provide them with genuine products. [KNT]
