MeT issues ‘Yellow, orange alert’ as Kashmir records season’s hottest day at 30.4 Celsius

Srinagar, Apr 15: Meteorological Department (MeT) has issued yellow and orange alerts for the two days, April 18 and 19 (Friday and Saturday) predicting light to moderate rains and snow in Jammu and Kashmir.

The forecast was issued amidst Kashmir recording the season’s hottest day on Tuesday with mercury settling at 30.4 degree Celsius in Srinagar, marking 10.2 degree Celsius above than average temperature.

The other parts of Kashmir including Qazigund (29.8 degree Celsius), Pahalgam (25.4 degree Celsius), Kupwara (29.5 degree Celsius) and Kokernag (27.5 degree Celsius) also witnessed the season’s hottest day today.

Gulmarg, however, recorded the highest departure of 11.2 degree Celsius than normal maximum temperature as the mercury at the famous ski-resort settled at 20.7 degree Celsius.

As per the details accessed by the news agency—Kashmir News Observer (KNO), the local MeT department issued yellow alert on April 18 in some parts of J&K while yellow and orange alerts have been issued for April 19 in several areas of the region.

Yellow alert warns to be aware while orange alert indicates to be prepared and updated.

As per the detailed forecast, the weather is expected to remain generally dry for the next two days while from April 18 to April 20, there is a possibility of light to moderate rain and snow (higher reaches) at most places and moderate to heavy rain at isolated to scattered places during 18th & 19th April accompanied with thunder and gusty winds from April 18th evening onwards.

On April 21, the MeT predicted cloudy weather with possibility of light rain and thunder at scattered places. “From April 22 to 25, the weather conditions would remain generally dry,” it added.

In between April 26 & 27, the weather would again turn cloudy in the region, the MeT said.

Meanwhile, the department has advised the travellers, tourists and transporters to plan accordingly & follow administration and traffic advisory.

The farmers have been advised to continue farm operations till April 17th, adding that there is a possibility of landslides, mudslides and shooting stones at vulnerable places during the period—(KNO)
