Shopian, 18 April : Several areas of the Shopian district witnessed a sudden and intense hailstorm today, causing significant damage to apple flowers, a crucial stage for the region’s vital apple crop. The affected areas include Balpora, Ganapora, Aglar, Padgochi, and Traporpora, leaving orchard owners worried about potential losses.
The unseasonal hailstorm, which swept through the region in the afternoon, blanketed the orchards with ice pellets. This has directly impacted the delicate apple blossoms, which are essential for fruit development. Farmers in the affected villages are now assessing the extent of the damage, with initial reports suggesting a considerable impact on the flowering.
“The hailstorm was quite severe and unexpected,” said Firdous ahmad Lone an orchard owner from Ganapora. “The apple flowers are very vulnerable at this stage, and the impact of the hail could lead to a significant drop in fruit setting.”
The apple industry forms the backbone of Shopian’s economy, providing livelihoods to a large section of the population. Damage to the flowers at this crucial juncture raises concerns about potential economic repercussions for the region.
Officials from the local horticulture department are expected to visit the affected areas to assess the losses and provide guidance to the farmers. The extent of the long-term impact on the apple yield will become clearer in the coming days as the surviving flowers develop.
This hailstorm serves as a stark reminder of the vulnerability of the agricultural sector to unpredictable weather patterns. Farmers are hoping for favorable weather conditions in the coming weeks to mitigate the damage and salvage what they can of their apple crop.
