Singhpora, Oct 9: Residents of Singhpora and adjoining villages in north Kashmir’s Baramulla district have expressed strong resentment over the absence of doctors during night hours at the local Sub-Centre, alleging that patients are forced to suffer in emergencies due to lack of medical attention.

Locals said that while the health facility caters to a large population from Singhpora, Nihalpora, and adjacent areas, it remains virtually unmanned during the night. “No doctor is available after evening hours. Only a few interns are seen on duty, and they often say they are not authorized to handle serious cases,” said Ghulam Nabi, a resident of Nihalpora. “We are forced to travel to Pattan or even Baramulla during emergencies, which can prove fatal at times.”

Another local resident, Rafiqa Begum, said that the absence of night staff has caused repeated distress among the people. “We had to take my ailing mother to Pattan hospital at midnight last week because there was no doctor available here. The names of doctors are there on the roster, but they are never present,” she said.

Locals alleged that despite repeated complaints, the situation has not improved. “The building and infrastructure are there, but without doctors at night, it is just a structure,” one resident remarked.

When contacted, Block Medical Officer (BMO) Pattan acknowledged the issue and said an inquiry has been initiated. “We have received complaints regarding the absence of doctors during night hours at Sub-Centre Singpora. A team has been deputed to verify the claims, and strict action will be taken against anyone found negligent,” the BMO said.

Meanwhile, Chief Medical Officer (CMO) Baramulla assured that the matter is being taken seriously. “Healthcare delivery cannot be compromised. We are reviewing the staff deployment and will ensure that proper night duties are maintained. Action will follow against absentee medical officers,” the CMO said.

Residents have appealed to the health authorities to ensure round-the-clock medical services at the Sub-Centre to avoid further hardships.
