Srinagar, Oct 08: With winter approaching in Kashmir, a veteran artisan from Charar-i-Sharief in Central Kashmir’s Budgam district has once again showcased his exceptional skill by crafting two giant-sized Kangris.

Ali Mohammad Dar, who has been associated with the willow-wicker craft for nearly 60 years, is known for making unusually large and tall Kangris. This time, he has crafted two even bigger Kangris, surpassing his previous creations.

Dar was awarded the UT Award 2022 – Certificate of Excellence (First Prize) for Willow Wicker craft by the Directorate of Handicrafts & Handloom, Kashmir, for his outstanding contribution to the traditional craft.

Talking to GNS, Dar said such giant Kangris are mostly used as decorative pieces and gifting items. He said hotels and other commercial establishments use them for decoration, and they have also become part of Kashmiri weddings and cultural functions.

Dar said the price of each giant Kangri ranges between Rs 14,000 to Rs 15,000 depending on its size and craftsmanship, and it takes him about five days to complete one piece.

The Kangri – an earthen pot encased in finely woven willow wicker – remains a symbol of Kashmir’s culture and a traditional source of warmth during the harsh winter.

For Dar, the craft is not just a livelihood but a legacy he has been carrying forward for decades, blending tradition with innovation to keep the age-old art alive.(GNS)
